Former NFL QB Jay Cutler is charged with drunk driving and weapons possession

Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested Thursday night after a traffic accident in Tennessee and faces four charges, a Franklin (Tenn.) Police Department spokesman told ESPN.

Cutler, 41, was charged with driving under the influence, possession of a handgun while under the influence, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision and implied consent.

According to a statement from the Franklin Police Department, officers responded to a minor traffic incident in downtown Franklin around 5 p.m. Thursday. Police investigations indicate that Cutler struck another vehicle.

"During their conversation with Cutler, officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol," the statement said. "Cutler was slurring his speech and had bloodshot eyes. Cutler refused sobriety tests and was transported to a local hospital where a blood sample was taken using a search warrant."

A police search of Cutler's vehicle revealed that he had two firearms in his possession, including a loaded pistol.

Cutler was booked into the Williamson County Jail shortly before 7 p.m. and given $5,000 bail. He was released at 9:59 p.m. that evening.

Cutler was selected in the first round by the Denver Broncos in 2006, where he played until 2008. In the 2009 draft, he was traded to the Chicago Bears, for whom he played 102 games until the 2016 season. With 23,443 yards and 154 touchdowns, he is the franchise's all-time leading passer. He played his last season with the Miami Dolphins in 2017.
