Anthony Edwards stats tonight: How did the Timberwolves star fare against the Lakers? (October 22) | 2024-25 NBA season
Anthony Edwards is an American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA. He played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Edwards played football until he was 10 years old before switching to basketball after watching his brothers play the sport. The Minnesota Timberwolves selected him as the first pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and he was an NBA All-Star reserve in the 2024-25 season.
Early life
He played at the shooting guard position and started playing for Therrell High School but transferred to Holy Spirit Preparatory School after his success. At the end of his senior season, Edwards averaged 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. He was rated a five-star recruit by major recruiting agencies and participated in the McDonald's All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
Anthony Edwards chose Georgia because he wanted to play for coach Tom Crean, who coached two of his favorite players, Dwyane Wade and Victor Oladipo. In his debut, he scored 24 points, nine rebounds and four steals in a 91-72 win over Western Carolina. That was the most points by a Georgia debutant since Dominique Wilkins, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979. In a 93-85 loss to third-ranked Michigan State at the Maui Invitational, he scored 37 points, including 33 in the second half, and recorded six rebounds, four steals and three blocks.
As a freshman, Edwards averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He was the team's leading scorer and also the leading scorer nationally. Anthony Edwards was named SEC Freshman of the Year and named to the SEC 2nd Team. He was also a finalist for the Jerry West Award, which recognizes the best college shooting guard.
NBA Journey
Edwards declared for the NBA Draft and was selected first overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2020 NBA Draft. In his first game, Edwards played just 25 minutes and scored 15 points, along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. He then scored a career-high 42 points in the game against the Phoenix Suns, becoming the third-youngest player in NBA history to do so. As a result, Edwards was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
The young Timberwolves guard joins the list of those who scored 2,000 points in their first 100 games at the age of 20 or younger. In October 2024, Edwards played his first playoff game against the Memphis Grizzlies, and in Game 1 he scored 36 points and 6 assists. Although he played well in the playoffs, the Timberwolves were eliminated from the playoffs in October. In 2024, Edwards was selected as an NBA All-Star reserve.
